Must be comfortable with a sewing machine and a commercial dress pattern. Tailoring experience is an advantage. The workshop does not cover basic sewing skills and students should therefore be very confident with a sewing machine and know how to work with fabric.
Tuition, materials, lunch and refreshments for 3 days
A three day intermediate corset making course where students will learn how to make a single layer Edwardian corset with elegant swooping seams and a modern fit. This course is suitable for intermediate sewers who are comfortable with reading and adjusting commercial sewing patterns.
At the start of the course, time will be spent discussing the basics of corsetry including how a corset works, anatomy of a corset, appropriate fabrics for corsetry, using fashion fabric, different methods and styles of corsetry, corsetry hardware and the differences between Victorian and Edwardian corset styles. We will then measure up and create a toile in order to acheive a perfect fit for the finished corset. The remaining two days will be spent making the corset proper with corsetry coutil and fashion fabric.
The Edwardian corsetry course uses the Truly Victorian Edwardian corset pattern to explore the following corsetry techniques while making up the corset. These techniques, are transferable to any corset making pursuits:
Tracing, marking and cutting the corset pattern
Making and fitting a toile
Altering the Edwardian corset block
Inserting the busk
Assembly using enclosed lapped seams
Placement of boning channels in Edwardian corsetry
The following materials will be supplied to each person:
Plain herringbone coutil
Steel boning and eyelets
A list of what students should bring with them will be supplied in advance of the course.
By the end of this corsetry course you will not only have a complete, hand made corset, but you will have an extremely good understanding of how to make and fit any modern corset based on Victorian corset technology, how a corset works in relation to the body and the fabric it is made from, and how to apply this knowledge to different sizes and body shapes.
This corsetry course is unique amongst other courses available as it will give you an exceptional grounding for future corset making adventures and includes knowledge that is not available on shorter courses or in classes where the teacher does not specialise in corsetry.
In addition to making a corset, there will be opportunities to look at part made and complete corsets, different types of corsetry and also a chance to leaf through an extensive library of corset books.
The cost of the workshop is per person and includes venue hire, tuition, materials detailed above, morning and afternoon refreshments and a delicious sandwich lunch (vegetarian to cover all).
You will receive a booking confirmation upon check out which contains a link to course joining notes and logistics.
